So I logged onto Facebook  today only to be greeted by something unexpected. Hold on to your hats, boys & girls: Facebook has added yet ANOTHER feature you’ll probably love to pointlessly freak out about.

Facebook is now suggesting location tags for your uploaded photos. This is awesome because by geotagging your photos, you can easily organize them in  interesting new ways and most importantly, find them again much more easily. For instance, wouldn’t it be cool to get a bird’s eye view of all the locations you’ve visited, complete with pictures YOU’VE taken? Or seamlessly search for pictures you’ve taken at a specific location?

What makes this feature particularly interesting is how well Facebook seems to figure out where the pictures were taking. The simple reality is, if you don’t have GPS built into your camera (ie most smart-phones) or have an external GPS attachment for your camera/DSLR, geolocating your photos is a pain in the ass. Facebook seems to be trying to make the experience easier and more convenient.

Some will probably say it’s creepy. Me? I say AWESOME. In any event… let the rejoicing / freaking out commence…

Noticed this as well, but can’t seem to figure out how they’ve identified my DSLR photos as I do not have an external attachment? Only thing I can think of is that it may be reading a geo tag of the same photo some how that I uploaded to Flickr, but find this highly unlikely or feasible. Thoughts?

Not entirely sure to tell you the truth… But here is my best guess: Data Mining.

The EXIF info of your picture will have a time stamp. So perhaps Facebook is matching this info with the locations from which you logged into Facebook around the time/date the picture was taken?

Dont think so.It recognized pics from totally different locations that are like woods and so and could be anywhere.
